Brazil and Morocco, two surprise finalists in the three-day tournament at the KINTEX 2 Exhibition Center in the western Seoul suburb of Goyang, put on a great show in the octagon in a bout that was decided at the last second thanks to a point scored by Brazil.

The Latin Americans, who had just won the gold medal for men's team in the debut of this modality in the recently concluded Pan American Games Santiago 2023 and bronze in women's teams, had in their ranks experienced athletes such as Sandy Macedo, this year's champion of the President of America Cup in Rio de Janeiro, and Maria Clara Pacheco, medalist in the Baku World Championship this year. They were accompanied by Vinicius Matos and Gabriel Santos, two emerging figures of Brazilian taekwondo, all guided by Clayton Santos, coach.

In the last edition of the World Team Cup neither Brazil nor Morocco had been present, and today, four years later, both gave a great taekwondo show at the highest level: Brazil won the first round of the best-of-three system. Morocco balanced the balance in the second round and in the last round, with ten seconds left, the African team pounced with continuous attacks but the Brazilians kept the rhythm, defended well and in the end, scored the precise points to win a dramatic and hard-fought World Cup: the first in the history of the Pan American region since 2006, when the first World Team Taekwondo Championships were held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Brazilians, who had won the men's team bronze a day earlier, and now crowned champions of the 2023 World Cup, took home gold medals and US$20,000 in prize money. The North Africans, meanwhile, won silver and US$10,000.

Third place, and $5,000, went to Iran. The Iranians defeated the Ivory Coast today in the bronze medal match, 2-0.

Earlier, in the first semifinal, Brazil had come from behind to beat Iran 2-1. In the second semifinal, Morocco defeated Côte d'Ivoire 2-0.

In the quarterfinals, Morocco eliminated Mexico 2-0; Brazil pulled off the upset by defeating Korea at home in a hard-fought 2-1 victory; and Iran eliminated 2019 defending champions China 2-0.

Today's action brought the 2023 World Cup to a close. For three days, Goyang hosted a group of eight nations: Australia, Brazil, China, Ivory Coast, Iran, Korea, Mexico and Morocco.

Mixed teams feature two male and two female wrestlers. To help the audience distinguish the fighters, hidden behind a helmet and a trunk protector, the men wear black pants, the women white.

Although the teams are mixed, due to substitution rules, the actual fighting is purely female vs. female and male vs. male.

This format is gaining more and more space in the Olympic Movement, and was already present in Tokyo 2020 with a demonstration during each day of the competitions on Japanese soil.

World medalists Paulo Melo and Edival Marques, together with Rio 2016 Olympic athlete Maicon De Andrade, were far superior from the first round against the Chilean team made up of Aaron Contreras, Ignacio Morales and Joaquin Churchill, whom they defeated 48-16 to be crowned.

The South American team overcame four tough bouts to become champions, a result that meant the only gold for Brazil in Santiago 2023, since in the individual senior categories, they did not achieve any of the eight golds in dispute, and in poomsae they did not qualify for the Pan American competition.

The first victory was a close 101-95 win over Argentina's Lucas Guzmán, José Luís Acuña and Agustín Alves. Later, in the quarterfinals, they overcame Cubans Yaniel Fernandez, Guillermo Perez and Kelvin Calderon in a great physical and technical duel that ended with a six-point difference (76-70).

In the semifinals, the Brazilians dominated by double points (67-37) the brave Ecuadorian team composed of Adrián Miranda, José Nieto and Julio César Nazareno.

Brazil with the gold medal, Chile with the silver medal, along with Mexico and Ecuador, were the winning nations in the first staging of the men's Team Kyorugui in the Pan American Games.

Olympians Katherine Rodriguez, Mayerlin Mejia and Madelyn Rodriguez were part of the Dominican trio that shone in style at the Contact Sports Center located at the National Stadium Sports Complex in Santiago de Chile.

The Caribbean women defeated in the final 54-44 the Mexican team, which included world champion Leslie Soltero and international multi-medalists Fabiola Villegas and Victoria Heredia.

In the quarterfinals, the girls, led by coaches Enmanuele Mateo and Carlos Maldonado, overcame the Colombian trio of Andrea Ramirez, Gloria Mosquera and Laura Ramirez.

In the semifinal round, the Dominicans won an important victory over the Cuban team, 33-31.

Mexico won the silver medal, while the bronze medals went to the Cuban team (Arlettys Acosta, Frislaidys Martínez and Marlyn Pérez) and the Brazilian team (Sandy Macedo, María Clara Pacheco and Caroline Santos).

Team Kyorugui made its debut in these Pan American Games Santiago 2023, after making its debut in the last Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023, where the winning team was Mexico.

This modality is making its way into the Olympic Movement, and Santiago 2023 was the stage for its world premiere in multisport events around the world.

The Arroyo/Lee duo, who have acclaimed Mexico on every stage of the World Taekwondo poomsae circuit since cadet age with multiple world titles and medals, performed a freestyle poomsae line with a judges' score of 7,920 points to claim the gold.

Arroyo had just conquered the highest podium a day before at the Contact Sports Center, when she won the individual poomsae modality, while Lee took the bronze medal in that event.

The podium was completed by the pairs of Elián Ortega/Ingrid Arce (Nicaragua), with 7,880 points, while the bronzes went to Puerto Rico (Arelis Medina/Luís Colón) with 7,600 points and Katlen Jervez/Mario Troya of Ecuador with 7,600.

This is the second poomsae competition in the history of taekwondo at the Pan American Games and the first time that the freestyle mixed pairs event is held. In Lima 2019, Mexico's Ana Zulema Ibañez and Leonardo Juarez also won gold in traditional pairs poomsae.

PATU Press 20.09.2023. The Pan American Taekwondo Union accredited in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the third promotion of Pan American Referees after the conclusion of the Pan American Poomsae and Kyorugui Refereeing Seminar held from September 19 to 20 at the Marriot Hotel in the Carioca metropolis.

After the training and accreditation sessions held in Aguascalientes, Mexico (January) and Heredia, Costa Rica (February), Rio de Janeiro allowed more than 50 referees to be accredited with continental rank, under the guidance and direction of IR Axel Sanchez, PATU Referee Chairman and IR Araceli Ornelas (MEX).  

"We are proud to be able to provide them with the pedagogical tools and knowledge that will allow them to grow in the world of refereeing, and to move up and evolve from national referees to Pan American referees. We want our team of International Referees to grow and strengthen in the near future", said Mario Mandel, PATU Secretary General, who accompanied the participants on the closing day on September 20, together with Hung Ki Kim, PATU vice-president and technical delegate for the President's Cup G2 to be held in Rio de Janeiro.

The Seminar covered current issues of the World Taekwondo kyorugui rules, as well as aspects of interest related to the evaluation criteria of recognized poomsae and freestyle.

“I am happy to be able to promote and help the new generations of referees. The Pan American Referees Seminar was the preamble to the start of the President's Cup Pan America G2 Rio de Janeiro 2023, the first edition of this tournament to be held in South America, which brings together a large number of athletes who will qualify for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

The tournament will be held from September 21 to 24 at the Arena Carioca 1 in Rio de Janeiro, and will award 20 points to the World Taekwondo ranking and Pan American P8 Ranking for cadets and juniors.

This type of initiative seeks to accompany the injured to enjoy the activities that the Panamerican Taekwondo Union carries out in search of the promotion, development and evolution of our sport.

A few years ago, WT launched a campaign to prevent harassment and abuse in the sport. Now, PATU assumes this role to increase forces in the fight to maintain the harmony and good performance of Taekwondo in the region.

López Delgado and Mandel held an important meeting with Dr. Chuncheon Choue, President of World Taekwondo, and with Jeongkang Seo, Secretary General of WT, to explain in detail the organizational status of the eighth edition of the taekwondo tournament in the history of the continent's great multisport festival.

"Both Dr. Choue and Mr. Seo will be accompanying us in the opening ceremonies and development of the Pan American Games competitions. We are very happy to have the presence of our highest authorities of world taekwondo, which ratifies the harmony and good relations between WT and this PATU administration."López Delgado confirmed from South Korea, adding that the meeting also served to present the planning and agenda of events in the Americas in 2024.

"We made an important explanation led by Mario Mandel about everything that will be these Pan American Games, which are a key competition within PATU's annual agenda and which I am sure will set an important precedent as a Multisport Games in the year leading up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games." continued Lopez Delgado, also vice president of World Taekwondo.

Santiago 2023 will unveil a Combat Pavilion and taekwondo will be one of the first three sports to inaugurate it.

"This Pavilion is located in the National Stadium Complex, it is the 12th stage and it is practically ready for the formal delivery. This Pavilion will house judo, karate and taekwondo. Dr. Choue was able to see a video that we presented to him and the plans, so that he could understand how the flow of the upper and exit lanes will look like, as well as the different departments for ParaTaekwondo."

The Santiago 2023 taekwondo tournament will be held at the new Contact Sports Center located in the Nuñoa district, inside the National Stadium Complex, from October 21 to 24.

The competitions will gather 136 athletes who won their qualification in the past Junior Pan American Games Cali - Valle 2021 and this year in the Continental Qualifying Tournament held last March in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Kyorugui Senior will be contested in Olympic weight divisions, while poomsae will make its second historic appearance in this multi-sport event, where Team Kyorugui will make its debut.
