The LAE. Juan Manuel López, president of PATU and vice president of World Taekwondo, made official the classification of these four competitors this December 3, closing date of the WT Olympic ranking, according to the classification system of this sport to Paris 2024.

"The circuit designed by PATU met the objective set out, as there were 100% more qualifiers via ranking in an Olympic period compared to the cycle on the road to Tokyo 2020," explained López Delgado, who congratulated the athletes from the United States, Mexico and Canada, who "have had a path to qualification with impressive results in the Pan American and world circuit."

Heading to Tokyo 2020, only Skylar Park of Canada and Paige McPherson of the United States managed to qualify through the World Taekwondo ranking system, in which the top five in each weight division earn an Olympic ticket.

Daniela Souza MEX

Souza sealed her Olympic ticket by closing the December 2023 ranking in fifth place in the -49kg with 353.91 points. In 2022 she was world champion in Guadalajara, and comes from winning the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. This cycle she has been twice winner of the specific Pan American Championships (Cancun 2021 and Punta Cana 2022) and has remained among the top 16 in the world in recent months, which has allowed her since last year to compete in the Grand Prix circuit, with a bronze in Rome 2022 as her best result to date, and two continuous participations in the final series (Riyadh and Manchester). She was also runner-up at the Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 23' and is a multiple world open medalist, in addition to winning bronze at the WT Women's World Championship in Saudi Arabia in 2021.

Skylar Park  CAN

She is the only athlete in the Pan American area to repeat Olympic qualification via ranking for the second consecutive Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024), this time as the third best in the world in the -57kg. This cycle she has been Pan American champion in Cancun 2021 and Punta Cana 2022, in addition to winning the Pan American Games Santiago 2023. In 2022 she won a silver medal and two bronzes in the Grand Prix circuit and this year she won her first gold in this tournament, winning the series in Taiyuan, China. This year she won three of the six events of the PATU 12 circuit: Panam Series Brazil, Copa Presidente de America and Pan American Games, results that consolidate her as the strongest -57kg in the region at present.

Carl Alan Nickolas USA

The American CJ clinched the ticket to his first Olympic Games by closing the December WT rankings in second place with 399.43, only surpassed by Italy's Simone Alessio. He is the most dominant athlete in the region in the -80kg, this Olympic cycle with total victories in the Pan American Cancun 2021, in the I Pan American Junior Games Cali-Valle, that same year, as well as in the Pan American Senior in Punta Cana 2022 and then in the Pan American Games Santiago 2023. He was world runner-up in Baku 2023 and in the Grand Prix circuit this season he was on the podium three times: bronzes in Paris and Taiyuan, plus a silver medal in Manchester.

Carlos Sansores MEX

Mexico's Carlos Sansores became this year the only heavyweight in the Americas to win three consecutive world medals in his category (silver in Manchester 2019, gold in Guadalajara 2022 and silver in Baku 2023), in addition to becoming champion of the Pan American Games Santiago 2023. Sansores closed the qualification period for Paris 2024 via WT Olympic ranking in second place with 440.21 points, only surpassed by the representative of Ivory Coast, Cheik Sallah Cissé. He has six victories between 2022 and 2023 in the main events of the Pan American Circuit.

Pan American taekwondo will have a new chapter in Olympic qualification on April 9-10 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, host of the region's Pre-Olympic Tournament, in which a total of 16 athletes will earn their ticket to Paris 2024.

Seeking to provide the same opportunities for the whole family, the Panamerican Taekwondo Union headed by its president Juan Manuel Lopez, will hold an intensive practice where coaches will be able to share with WT referees and educators, with the intention of unifying teaching criteria and Poomsae scoring.

"We are delighted to have achieved this important opportunity in the development of Poomsae. On this occasion, not only referees will be trained, but coaches of national, state or regional teams will have the opportunity to join this two-day talk given by WT, so they can take to their countries the same guidelines that referees have when it comes to scoring, and thus equalize the level of athletes and competitions for the benefit of all MNAs", said Juan Manuel Lopez, president of PATU.

The event has been designated to be held at the Santo Domingo Volleyball Palace, this 2023 venue of the Pan American Cadet and Junior Championships, as well as the taekwondo tournament of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

The information was made official this December 1st by the Pan American Taekwondo Union, the entity presided over by LAE. Juan Manuel López Delgado, also vice-president of World Taekwondo.

"In our administration, the Dominican Republic has become a place of high organizational level, with a good experience in the past Pan American Championships in Punta Cana 2022 and this year hosted the Pan American Cadet and Junior Championships, which served as a rehearsal for this taekwondo sub venue in the framework of the Central American and Caribbean Games 2023," explains Lopez Delgado.

The Americas will be the closing Qualifier for all continents, in a circuit of events that starts in Africa (Dakar, Senegal February 10-11), continues in Europe (Sofia, Bulgaria March 9-10), and then continues the same month in Asia (Tai'an City, China March 15-16). On April 6, Oceania will hold its Olympic qualifying tournament in Honaira, Solomon Islands.

The Olympic Qualification system for Paris 2024 through the Continental tournaments will allow 16 competitors from the Pan American area (the finalists of each weight division) to qualify for the Olympic Games.

The same formula applies to Africa, Asia and Europe, while only eight athletes from Oceania will qualify through the Pre-Olympic.

The taekwondo tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be held at the Grand Palais in Paris from August 7 to 10.

In the meeting, important aspects for the near future of continental and world taekwondo were discussed, giving continuity to the approach at all levels with the continental taekwondo family.

"2024 is a year of great significance and at PATU, as always, we are concerned that the development of the entire Pan American family is integral. In this administration no one is left out and we will always provide all possible opportunities for their growth," emphasized President López Delgado empathetically.

In this meeting the events to be held next January were announced, an agenda that highlights the Certification course for new WT Poomsae referees -17 to 21 January-, which, thanks to a great work of PATU, will allow countries with less than ten active referees, to opt for the certification course, specifically those who hold the rank of II Dan Kukkiwon, which translates into better and greater opportunities for Latin American countries.

With national and Pan American coaches and judges in mind, on January 17 and 18, they will be able to participate in a joint practice with international referee applicants, in order to standardize teaching and qualification criteria.

Subsequently, the Pan American Poomase Congress will be held from January 25-27, by Master Raymond Hsu, which is focused on Poomsae coaches and athletes.

The kyorugi, meanwhile, will be active in the Pan American Refereeing Congress from January 25 to 27, where Team and Diamond modalities will be discussed. In addition, for athletes and coaches, kyorugi will have a seminar by Emmanuel Mateo -DOM-, Carla Bacco -CAN- and Arlén González -CUB-, also from January 25 to 27.

This major convention in the region will culminate with the PATU gala dinner on January 28.

Busy first half of the year
In addition, the Senior Pan American Championship of the G-4 category will be held in Brazil, which will provide a large number of points to position all athletes in search of the ranking for the Olympic Games and a better positioning for those who manage to be part of these important competitions.

"We have a first semester with many events for our teams to position themselves in the best way, and a second semester where we will continue sowing in all age divisions and modalities, already thinking about the next Olympic cycle and placing PATU at the top," confirmed the leader, also vice president of World Taekwondo.

Brazil and Morocco, two surprise finalists in the three-day tournament at the KINTEX 2 Exhibition Center in the western Seoul suburb of Goyang, put on a great show in the octagon in a bout that was decided at the last second thanks to a point scored by Brazil.

The Latin Americans, who had just won the gold medal for men's team in the debut of this modality in the recently concluded Pan American Games Santiago 2023 and bronze in women's teams, had in their ranks experienced athletes such as Sandy Macedo, this year's champion of the President of America Cup in Rio de Janeiro, and Maria Clara Pacheco, medalist in the Baku World Championship this year. They were accompanied by Vinicius Matos and Gabriel Santos, two emerging figures of Brazilian taekwondo, all guided by Clayton Santos, coach.

In the last edition of the World Team Cup neither Brazil nor Morocco had been present, and today, four years later, both gave a great taekwondo show at the highest level: Brazil won the first round of the best-of-three system. Morocco balanced the balance in the second round and in the last round, with ten seconds left, the African team pounced with continuous attacks but the Brazilians kept the rhythm, defended well and in the end, scored the precise points to win a dramatic and hard-fought World Cup: the first in the history of the Pan American region since 2006, when the first World Team Taekwondo Championships were held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Brazilians, who had won the men's team bronze a day earlier, and now crowned champions of the 2023 World Cup, took home gold medals and US$20,000 in prize money. The North Africans, meanwhile, won silver and US$10,000.

Third place, and $5,000, went to Iran. The Iranians defeated the Ivory Coast today in the bronze medal match, 2-0.

Earlier, in the first semifinal, Brazil had come from behind to beat Iran 2-1. In the second semifinal, Morocco defeated Côte d'Ivoire 2-0.

In the quarterfinals, Morocco eliminated Mexico 2-0; Brazil pulled off the upset by defeating Korea at home in a hard-fought 2-1 victory; and Iran eliminated 2019 defending champions China 2-0.

Today's action brought the 2023 World Cup to a close. For three days, Goyang hosted a group of eight nations: Australia, Brazil, China, Ivory Coast, Iran, Korea, Mexico and Morocco.

Mixed teams feature two male and two female wrestlers. To help the audience distinguish the fighters, hidden behind a helmet and a trunk protector, the men wear black pants, the women white.

Although the teams are mixed, due to substitution rules, the actual fighting is purely female vs. female and male vs. male.

This format is gaining more and more space in the Olympic Movement, and was already present in Tokyo 2020 with a demonstration during each day of the competitions on Japanese soil.

World medalists Paulo Melo and Edival Marques, together with Rio 2016 Olympic athlete Maicon De Andrade, were far superior from the first round against the Chilean team made up of Aaron Contreras, Ignacio Morales and Joaquin Churchill, whom they defeated 48-16 to be crowned.

The South American team overcame four tough bouts to become champions, a result that meant the only gold for Brazil in Santiago 2023, since in the individual senior categories, they did not achieve any of the eight golds in dispute, and in poomsae they did not qualify for the Pan American competition.

The first victory was a close 101-95 win over Argentina's Lucas Guzmán, José Luís Acuña and Agustín Alves. Later, in the quarterfinals, they overcame Cubans Yaniel Fernandez, Guillermo Perez and Kelvin Calderon in a great physical and technical duel that ended with a six-point difference (76-70).

Brazil with the gold medal, Chile with the silver medal, along with Mexico and Ecuador, were the winning nations in the first staging of the men's Team Kyorugui in the Pan American Games.

Olympians Katherine Rodriguez, Mayerlin Mejia and Madelyn Rodriguez were part of the Dominican trio that shone in style at the Contact Sports Center located at the National Stadium Sports Complex in Santiago de Chile.

The Caribbean women defeated in the final 54-44 the Mexican team, which included world champion Leslie Soltero and international multi-medalists Fabiola Villegas and Victoria Heredia.

In the quarterfinals, the girls, led by coaches Enmanuele Mateo and Carlos Maldonado, overcame the Colombian trio of Andrea Ramirez, Gloria Mosquera and Laura Ramirez.

In the semifinal round, the Dominicans won an important victory over the Cuban team, 33-31.

Mexico won the silver medal, while the bronze medals went to the Cuban team (Arlettys Acosta, Frislaidys Martínez and Marlyn Pérez) and the Brazilian team (Sandy Macedo, María Clara Pacheco and Caroline Santos).

Team Kyorugui made its debut in these Pan American Games Santiago 2023, after making its debut in the last Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023, where the winning team was Mexico.

This modality is making its way into the Olympic Movement, and Santiago 2023 was the stage for its world premiere in multisport events around the world.
